Digital postcard #2: Weta(s).

So we visited the Karori Sanctuary, a 500-year project to restore the temperate rainforest inside Wellington, where we saw some flightless birds, lizards, and giant bugs, plus very large ferns and deadly mushrooms.

A suspension bridge over the valley.

I admit: hilly green places make me feel quite at home.

Amanita muscaria. Don't eat it. Really.

Then we went to the Weta Cave (not to be confused with the cave where weta live). I saw Gollum, Lurtz, that dog from The Frighteners, Jane from Jane and the Dragon, and lots and lots of guns.

I’m still recovering from jet lag, by the way. I don’t know if I’m going to do one of these for every day that I’m here, but the first couple days were lots of tourist-y sightseeing fun that I thought you guys would like.

I wasn't going to climb on Lurtz. Not with him making that face.

The toadstool gives me happy feelings! (From looking at it, not from eating it)

It really is the most perfect Amanita I’ve ever seen!

My cousin Dave studied filmmaking in Wellington so I heard a bit of Wellywood gossip, too. ;)
