Wow. Every weekend we get closer to finishing principal photography. Thanks to our incredible team, I am floored every time I look at the raw footage. But wait. Uh oh, guys. It’s another SRS GLYNIS POST. This weekend we filmed one of my favorite scenes I’ve ever written. I didn’t know it at the time, but I wrote it for our partner Ralph Fontaine. I’m in it, but I’m silent, no dialogue. I can’t really tell you what it’s about, of course. But writing, producing, stunt choreographing, and acting it … [ read more » ]
It’s hard when you’re writing a role for yourself to act in not to be selfish. You have to not only think about the technical aspects of writing, which is challenging enough, you have to write the character holistically, in service of the whole story and as a fully-realized human being. In Causality, I am being selfish: I wasn’t getting cast — there are never enough roles for women to go around — so I wrote a character for me! I have a lot of opportunities for interesting moments, both sad and … [ read more » ]
Here’s the thing, and you need to understand this: All writers are liars. It’s what we do. It’s what you come to us for, in fact — you want us to lie to you, to tell you about things that never happened and people who never existed. You want us to lie to you so well that you believe in it, at least enough to feel happy when good things happen to the imaginary people we make you care about, to feel sad when they struggle and fail. I am … [ read more » ]
“We’re more of the love, blood, and rhetoric school. Well, we can do you blood and love without the rhetoric, and we can do you blood and rhetoric without the love, and we can do you all three concurrent or consecutive. But we can’t give you love and rhetoric without the blood. Blood is compulsory. They’re all blood, you see.” — Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead We got a surprise here at Team Causality World Headquarters this morning — someone set up a listing for us at SciFinal, the portal … [ read more » ]
So last time, I told you about fleshing out the season one outline into a treatment, and I mentioned that “the way all the various plot threads combined ended up being very different than we had intended.” Let me tell you a little bit about that. There are, roughly, three major plotlines going on in the first season. Let’s call them A, B, and C. There are other smaller character arcs going on within those plotlines, but we’ll set that aside for the moment — these are … [ read more » ]
Last week, I finally stopped procrastinating and tackled something I’ve been needing to do for a while. Late last year, Glynis and I put together an outline for the first season. I talked a little bit about our process for that in my post last week. We were pretty excited when we finished it — we felt like we were done, finally, with putting together the story. The next time we met with Ralph, it quickly became clear that we weren’t. We tried to go over … [ read more » ]
I have to admit, every now and then wearing too many hats on a project this big is kind of a problem. Like tonight. What I was supposed to be doing tonight was making my edits to our Season One outline, in preparation for a story meeting with Glynis tomorrow night. But first, I thought I’d add the Social RSS app to our Facebook page, so we can share our blog posts here over there automatically. Seemed like a fun idea, and should only take a few minutes to set … [ read more » ]
Hey there, Time Travelers, here’s something I thought it might be fun for you to see — once I’d taken the time to make sure there was no legible text on it, natch. I don’t want you spoilering yourselves. Here it is: Okay, you’re thinking — what am I looking at? That’s one whole big wall of Glynis’ live-in performance space, covered with little colored index cards. So that’s probably, what, about 8 feet by 12 feet? The first day we sat down to really start trying to turn … [ read more » ]
One of the first questions that presented itself when I first started thinking about the idea that eventually became CAUSALITY was a simple one — who are these time travelers? I don’t just mean, what are the characters themselves like? Because that’s an even more involved question, one I didn’t even begin to tackle until I had Glynis Mitchell’s help. What I meant was — who is this group? What are they all about and what do they do? The immediately obvious idea was that they … [ read more » ]
They say, “no plan survives contact with the enemy.” What they don’t think to warn you about is your friends …. When I first started mulling over the idea that eventually became CAUSALITY, it was supposed to be simple. That was the whole point of it. It wasn’t honestly even a project I ever thought I would really tackle someday, more of a gedanken, a thought experiment. I’d seen a lot of extremely low-budget science fiction made for the web, by people who were honestly just talented … [ read more » ]
